The Carson Company
Promoting Green Construction Practices
The Carson Company is a member of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) which is comprised of the nation's top architects, builders and building owners who are committed to developing practices that foster environmentally sustainable buildings and communities.
The environmental impacts of building design, construction and operation are significant. According to the USGBC, non-residential buildings now account for over 30% of the total energy and over 60% of the total electricity consumed in the U.S. each day. These same buildings consume in excess of five billion gallons of potable water each day. A typical 100,000 square foot commercial building in the U.S. contributes over 125 tons of solid waste to local landfills. The environmental impact of providing and operating commercial space necessitates immediate action to provide more sustainable building practices.
In response to this need, the USGBC developed the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System in 1998. Since then LEED has grown to encompass over 14,000 projects in the US and 30 other countries covering 1.062 billion square feet of developed area.
Recently, the Carson Company was selected as the LEED-accredited general contractor for the Savannah College of Art and Design $10MM Arnold Hall classroom building. The project was completed in August of 2008, and has applied for LEED "Silver" certification.
